The official poster for the 47th Cairo International Film Festival has sparked widespread controversy after the late artist Shadia appeared in a design created using artificial intelligence techniques, amid criticism from her family regarding her features. Meanwhile, the festival’s president, Hussein Fahmy, defended the idea of the poster, considering that the use of these techniques aligns with technological advancements in creative industries.
Hussein Fahmy Explains the Poster Concept
During the press conference for the festival, Hussein Fahmy clarified that the design is inspired by the character “Fouada,” portrayed by Shadia in the film “Something of Fear,” emphasizing that the idea does not aim to reproduce an identical image of the late artist’s features, but rather to celebrate her status in the history of Egyptian cinema.
In response to the criticisms regarding the use of artificial intelligence, Fahmy stated: “This is the future,” pointing out the difference in employing these techniques in designing promotional materials compared to relying on them in film production.
Shadia’s Family Criticizes the Design
On the other hand, Nahed Shakir, the niece of the late artist, expressed her dissatisfaction with the image of her aunt on the poster, criticizing her features in the design that was prepared using artificial intelligence.
Nahed Shakir commented on the poster in a post on Facebook, saying: “What is this look? Is this really Shadia? What I understood is that this edition is about restoring films, and this is like something of fear after it has been restored,” referring to her objection to the image used, despite it being inspired by the character “Fouada” that Shadia embodied in the famous film.
Celebrating 50 Years of Establishment
The controversy coincides with the Cairo International Film Festival’s preparations to launch its 47th edition from November 11 to 20, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of its establishment.
The poster evokes the history of Egyptian cinema by referencing its icons and notable works, alongside the festival’s interest in restoring classic films and re-screening them for new generations, in an attempt to combine the preservation of cinematic heritage with keeping pace with technological developments.
